Child-Centered Learning

Background

Thai teaching methodology is rooted in an old belief that the job of a teacher is to stand in front of a class and deliver knowledge to their young and impressionable students. The students role in this learning context is to sit quietly absorb the knowledge being imparted to them by the "sage on the stage." This is, as we know, a teaching methodology that is both outdated and inefficient, especially in language learning classes.

To address the problem, the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority commissioned me to provide teacher training to roughly 150 Bangkok public school teachers. The training aimed to lay the foundation for a fundamental change in classroom management--from teacher-centered classroom environments to student-centered classroom environments (they insisted on using the term child-centered which has no difference in meaning compared to the normally used student-centered).
