Ryan Wiley

English for Importing and Exporting

Background

I wrote and designed this book at Rajabhat University, Thailand.

Sample Content

Each chapter starts with a Reading section. This section serves as an introduction to the chapter, an introduction to new vocabulary, and an introduction to processes and procedures  associated with the business of importing and exporting. I also included sub-skills components, in this case metacognition and active learning.

In the Reading Comprehension section, I used a post-text extension activity instead of standard comprehension questions. There are several reasons for doing this. First, having students produce a visual representation of what the text explained requires them to read and re-read the text until they understand it enough to accurately complete the diagram, which increases both gist and detail comprehension. Second, producing a diagram is a non-standard form of reading comprehension that increases student engagement. Finally, examination of the diagrams gave me, as the teacher, an opportunity to monitor student output and offer both delayed and immediate feedback.
